Winter Warmers

June 1, 2017

Preparing for the winter is a long last past time that animals do to make sure they have adequate food, fuel and downtime for the colder, darker months. Humans, however have lost touch with this preparation and ritual and sometimes it can be to our detriment. Sickness and illness start to run havoc if our bodies aren’t ready for the cyclical changes. Life can be a busy pace with not much time for introspection and dedication to our health and well being, winter offers us the space to slow down and still the restless mind during this seasonal change.

Here are some tips on Health and Well being that can help prepare us for this more internal, quieter time of the year.

Get a massage or body therapy

Massage has been long used for its incredible immune enhancing and detoxifying benefits. It also gives the mind a chance to unwind and help the body to relax. Self massage can also be a great way to move things around and improve blood flow. Take a short community course in massage and learn how to help others, yourself or go and experience one for yourself.

Other therapies that help with improving well being and health are Reiki, Lymphatic Drainage, Hot Stone, Acupuncture, Reflexology and Float Tanks, just to name a few.

Use essential oils in your home and bedroom

The benefits of using essential oils can be felt not only through the sense of smell but also in a non-direct way; through the benefits of the plant/flower and the medicinal properties of it. Make sure you use only quality essential oils that are A grade, organic, sustainable and locally sourced if possible. Some great oils for winter are Eucalyptus, Lavender, Juniper, Marjoram, Sweet Orange, Sage, Lemon, Cajaput, Wintergreen. Diffuse them in a bath, vaporizer, diffuser or oil burner, even a drop or two on your pillow at night for a restful sleep.

Great oils can be found at Perfect Potion stores in Australia or through Doterra or Young Living for overseas.

Meditate

As winter is a time to hibernate in nature, it is a great time to become more contemplative in daily life. Doing just 5-10 minutes of meditation throughout your day can offer incredible rewards for peace of mind. Mediation doesn’t have to be just switching off the mind, it can be a practice that can include mindfulness on many other levels too. Tai Chi, walking, yoga, focusing on the breath, listening to relaxing sounds or music, even drawing can be a meditation. There are many guided practices and books which give some techniques to use. Book in for a private session with a teacher if you have the idea to try but don’t know where to start.

A specially designed practice can be the best way to explore what’s best for any individual.
