Self Care Rituals

April 10, 2018

We all get put through the ringer. Welcome to planet Earth. I am not going to get too philosophical about it, but I want to say, "what is this?".

The question of being here on this spinning rock in outer space?

Preposterous right?

Well, while we are all here, we are continuing to spin. And if we are continuing to spin, we must continue to feel, go through ups and downs, adapt to change and transition and basically keep on keeping on.

As a 12 year practicing massage therapist, reiki practitioner and a yoga teacher, I know the importance of self care. If I don't draw upon some rituals of self care in my weekly routine, I can mentally and physically suffer.

The last few years have been quite challenging for me on an internal level. I have gone through a lot of rough patches and been forced to look deeper within myself and recognize the emotional absence and self abandonment that has been showing up.

Coming through it now, I can safely say; I love myself.

Totally.

What has held me up in the darkness must have been the inner knowing that even if I abandon self, self is still there after. Waiting patiently  for me to come back. Unwavering. Resolutely resilient to the shutdown.

It's unfathomable to know how this is the only reliable resource I have on this spinning rock in outer space. I'm not dependent on anyone, anything, solely self reliance. Needless to say, I'm still learning.

So what now?

Well some positive self care is always necessary to keep the maintenance of self love propelling forwards and upwards, even if your feeling unstoppable.

Here's a few self care rituals to start incorporating into your daily and weekly routine.

NATURE NURTURE

Get out of the congestion of city life.

  • Get in nature.

  • Swim in the ocean.

  • Walk outdoors.

  • Sit on a rock or under a tree.

  • Go on a hike

  • Bike ride in the park.

CREATE

Find a creative outlet.

  • Painting, drawing, doodling, coloring in.

  • Sing out loud.

  • Go dance.

  • Move your body.

  • Stretch.

  • Cook some nurturing food.

  • Write in a journal some simple thoughts or sentences. When we write things down, they have much more propulsion in coming true!

  • Try writing some poetry from your heart feels.

  • Re-arrange your house or room.

  • Arrange some flowers in a vase.

  • Spend time gardening or pot planting.

Creative outlets don't have to be grandiose , they can be simple acts of self expression. Minus any judgement that comes from this process.

Let your creative freedom be expressed in whichever ways it chooses to come out.

SWEAT

Your body needs a way to let go of toxins that collect from the day.

  • Saunas an steam rooms can help the body purge out toxins and rid the body of waste.

  • Get in a hot bath or even a spa to soak your bones and muscles.

  • Train at the gym or outdoors.

  • Do an exercise class you have always wanted to try.

  • Book into a workshop that interests you.

  • Yoga, Pilates, Tai-Chi, Martial Arts.

SOCIAL

Spend some time being social.

Be around good people who feed your soul, nourish your heart, inspire you to be a better version of yourself and don't put you down or drain you, EVER!

But also remember to balance it out with some good down time too.

REFLECTION

Meditate.

If you have never tried to meditate before, there are plenty of good online meditation practices and apps such as Headspace, Mindful and Calm. Try some Yoga and relaxation practices such a Yoga Nidra and I Rest classes or courses.

Journal your reflections after to help facilitate the awareness of what has come up for you.

THERAPY

Physical and mental therapies can help move out unwanted emotions, physical tensions, blockages, traumas and even illness and disease.  Here are some great therapies that can help.

  • Massage

  • Reiki

  • Osteopathy

  • Kahuna Massage

  • Aromatherapy

  • Kinesiology

  • Naturopathy

  • Psychology

  • Counselling

  • Art Therapy

  • Acupuncture

SMALL ACTS OF SELF LOVE

Self love can be simple.

  • Get your hair done.

  • Go to the dentist.

  • Spend time on your couch.

  • Run a bath.

  • Read a book.

  • Take yourself out on a date.

  • Talk to strangers.

  • Help a friend or stranger.

If you can't love yourself fully, you will not be able to love anyone fully. Its all starts with YOU. Find time to practice the art of self nourishment. Make time for self care a priority when you need to and incorporate it into your life. Only you know when that time to nurture calls deep within.
